Endangered Shrew Conservation in Southern and Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania:An Ecological Study of Congosorex phillupsorum and Myosorex kihaulei

This conservation initiative focuses on the ecological study of two rare and endemic shrew species Congosorex phillipsorum and Myosorex kihaulei found in the Southern and Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania, particularly within the Udzungwa and Rungwe Mountain forests. The project aims to understand the distribution, habitat preferences, population status, and threats facing these species, which are currently under-documented and at risk due to habitat degradation and limited awareness. By conducting field surveys, habitat assessments, and engaging local communities, the research seeks to generate vital ecological data that can inform effective conservation strategies and policy interventions. Ultimately, this study contributes to the broader goal of conserving Tanzania's unique mountain biodiversity and ensuring the long-term survival of its lesser-known, yet ecologically important, small mammals.

Exploring Shrew Habitats: Behind the Scenes in Udzungwa and Rungwe

Earlier this month, our research team set out on a challenging journey through the Udzungwa and Rungwe Mountains as part of our ongoing study on two endangered shrew species—Congosorex phillipsorum and Myosorex kihaulei. This blog shares a glimpse of the real work behind conservation: walking long distances through thick forest, setting traps, recording data, and monitoring habitat conditions. The fieldwork is physically demanding, but each step brings us closer to protecting these unique mammals and the ecosystems they depend on.
